about

At the start of the pandemic I proposed a song-writing group to a variety of women that I had met in the bluegrass and old-time world. The bulk of the original songs on From the Land of Rusted Dreams were born out of that project. When I realized that my next step should be an album, I called up one of the other songwriters in the group, Gabrielle Macrae. Gabrielle proposed the exact plan that we put into place. She introduced Andrew and I to her dear friends Kati Claborn and her husband Luke Ydstie and along with Gabrielle's husband Barry Southern, the six of us spent a very fun, very rainy week in Astoria, OR recording in the cozy Rope Room Studio. For a first album, I couldn’t have been luckier in the dream team I had on this project, and I’m so thankful for the joy and friendship that resulted in this album. I hear it on every track and I hope you do too.

I'm so grateful to all the friends and family who have supported this dream and to try and list all my thank yous would take pages and pages. Thank you to every one of you who has helped me along this musical path, especially my forever favorite, Andrew & my mom and dad, Kate Troll and Bill Hanson, who have always supported my wild schemes.

1. Downstream | Erin Heist | A personal walk through memories of a curious childhood spent exploring the wilds of Southeast Alaska. 2. Somebody Somewhere | Erin Heist | A jelly-roll song for stranded small-town gals. 3. Undone in Sorrow | Ola Belle Reed | A favorite song from a favorite inspiration. 4. Stranger to You | Erin Heist | A mean bluegrass song about running into past mistakes. 5. Call Me a Fool | Erin Heist | A country burner for the heartsick. 6. Out of Town | Erin Heist | With no roads leading in or out of Southeast Alaska, getting "out of town" can be a struggle, but sometimes you just have to get out. 7. Red Heron | Erin Heist | A cowboy ballad about the sinking of a commercial seine boat. 8. Flame in My Heart | George Jones & Bernard Spurlock | The first country duet Andrew and I ever learned and still one of our favorites. 9. Black Dog Blues | Traditional | I learned this one from Flash in Pelican, Alaska. 10. Milk Run | Erin Heist | The dreaded milk run is the name of a variety of commercial airline flights, and a right of passage in Southeast Alaska - thanks to Alaska's Twitter scene for providing crowd-sourced flight delays. 11. Train to Cheyenne | Erin Heist | Written from the perspective of my great-grandma Betty, a depression-era mail-order bride who moved with her young son from Chicago to Wyoming to marry a cowboy she'd never met. 12. Sun Will Come the Dawn | Erin Heist | Cajun two-stepping my way through all the pre-pandemic fun that I truly believe will come again.

about

Erin Heist Juneau, Alaska

Erin Heist hails from the lush temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska. A singer and guitar player who has spent the last decade in Alaska moving from packed bar stages to all-night jams - steeped in the heartbeat-drive of old-time string-band rhythm, the high-harmonies of traditional bluegrass vocals, the lonesome sway of classic country waltzes, and the insatiable shuffle of Cajun fiddle. ... more
